"Premium" has become one of those words that's easy to say yet surprisingly difficult to define. It's everywhere.
Premium coffee. Premium luggage. Premium seating. Premium beach chairs.
Somewhere along the way, “premium” just became synonymous with “expensive.”
At Shibumi, we believe it means something else.
To us, premium isn't about adding more just for the sake of it. It's about making thoughtful decisions that quietly improve the experience, long before you ever notice them. Because the less you have to think about your gear, the more you get to enjoy the day.
That's the philosophy behind all of our products, including the Shibumi Chairs.
Thoughtful by Design
Good products solve problems, but thoughtful products solve the little frustrations you've been conditioned to expect.
When it comes to beach chairs, we’re talking about the strenuous walk from the parking lot. A chair that's incredibly awkward to carry. An aluminum frame that starts showing signs of rust after a season. That scratchy cloth that gets more uncomfortable the longer you sit. Shortcomings that just are what they are.
But we kept asking ourselves one simple question: "Shouldn't beach chairs be better?"
A frame built from anti-rust marine-grade aluminum and stainless steel components, designed to stand up to years of salt, sand, and sun. Breathable DreamWave fabric that suspends your body instead of resting it against rigid bars. A classic and tall model, both featuring our ergonomic NapCurve headrest, why both chairs offer four reclining positions, and why they fold into a slim profile with padded backpack straps that make the walk to the beach feel just a little shorter. Neoprene drink holder and essentials pouch because the little things matter too.
The result is a chair that's remarkably lightweight without feeling delicate and exceptionally comfortable without being overbuilt. It's a balance that's earned recognition from publications like Travel + Leisure, which praised its "excellent comfort" and breathable, supportive design, while Wirecutter described it as "remarkably light" for a chair of its size.
Elevating Beyond the Chair
Thoughtful design doesn't end when a product leaves our warehouse. It continues through the people who stand behind it.
Shibumi was founded in Raleigh, North Carolina, and it's still where we're based today. If you ever have a question, need help with your gear, or simply want to talk to someone who knows our products inside and out, there are real people here ready to help.
And if you have any hiccups, we'll do everything we can to make things right, because thoughtful design doesn't stop at checkout. We believe standing behind what we build is just as important as building it well in the first place.
Catching Peoples’ Attention
We didn't build the Shibumi Chair because we knew it would land on "best beach chair" lists or collect a bunch of awards. We built it because we believed beach chair buyers deserved better.
But along the way, people noticed. Dwell called it "The Holy Grail of Beach Chairs." The Spruce named it its "Most Comfortable Beach Chair," while The Independent praised its "serious comfort" and four reclining positions.
These recognitions mean a lot to us because they reinforce the philosophy that got us here in the first place.
More Than a Beach Chair
The Shibumi Chair was designed for long days by the ocean, and now it shows up at soccer games, concert lawns, campground weekends, backyard cookouts - wherever people gather outside.
Not because we designed it for every occasion, but because we designed it thoughtfully enough that people found new ones.
And that's the Shibumi Difference. It’s not a magazine feature earned, a type of material used, or an award won. It's hundreds of thoughtful decisions, each one removing a little friction from your day. A chair that's lighter to carry. A fabric that's more comfortable to sit in. A frame that's built to outlast seasons of salt and sand. Real people who answer the phone when you need them.
One their own, none of those things are particularly flashy. But together, they mean you spend less time thinking about your gear, and more time enjoying why you brought it in the first place.
