The Shibumi Story

Shibumi was founded in North Carolina by two brothers and their best friend who believed there had to be a better way to spend a day outside. 

What started with a wind-powered beach shade has evolved into a category-defining outdoor brand known for thoughtful design, award-winning products, and a relentless focus on simplicity.  Whether you're at the beach, the park, the sidelines, or somewhere in between, we're here to help you spend less time managing gear and more time making memories.

2016

It Started With An Idea

Frustrated by bulky tents and unreliable umbrellas, founders Dane, Scott,  and Alex set out to reinvent shade at the beach. Armed with a sewing machine and an idea, they taught themselves to sew and produced the first 32 Shibumi Shades that summer.

2022

Shade For Two Or Just For You

After thousands of requests from our community, we introduced the Shibumi Beach Shade Mini—bringing our signature wind-powered shade to travelers, couples, and solo beachgoers in a carry-on-friendly design.

2024

A Splash Of Color

For years, Ocean was the one and only Shibumi colorway. In 2021, Sunset became the first new addition to the lineup, introducing a warm, golden hue inspired by the last light of a perfect beach day and marking the beginning of a new chapter for the brand.

Raising the Bar for Beach Chairs

Built around the same principles that made the original Shibumi Shade a success, the Shibumi Chair brought lightweight construction, thoughtful innovation, and long-lasting durability to a category often defined by compromise. Designed for all-day comfort and built to last season after season, it quickly became an award-winning favorite.

Park Vista™ Expands the Horizon

With the introduction of Park Vista™, Shibumi expanded beyond its coastal roots. Designed for parks, sports sidelines, campsites, and outdoor gatherings, the award-winning shade brought the same lightweight convenience and thoughtful design to entirely new adventures.
